Hrishikesh Mukherjee

Oflate I am writing more on the movie reviews and earlier at one point I had decided that I shouldn't write on movies anymore and slowed down the movies articles. But with the current state of my life where work takes 15-16 hours of my day and I don't have any books with me to read while commuting to office, I had decided to watch movies that are offbeat, something that gives the satisfaction of reading a book. Currently I am exploring the movies by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

For many of us we might not have noticed this name, when we say the names of the movies he had directed, we'll realise that we might have seen most of his movies. Abhimaan, Anand, Anupama, Chupke Chupke, Golmaal, Khubsoorat, Bawarchi, Khatta Meetha, Baaton Baaton mein are few landmark movies he had made.

The best part of his movies are that they are set in the middle class mileu where we can easily identify with the characters. They could be living our next door or we stumble upon them on the roads, office and bus.. You start watching the movie and suddenly you realise that the movie is about to end or had just ended. Simple real life like movies without no drama, melodrama..

He had a set of actors with whom he had worked extensively. He was the reason for the rise of Amitabh Bachchan, launching the quintessential girl next door Jaya Bhaduri, giving Rekha the homely & comical image she had and above all introducing the parallel cinema superstar Amol Palelkar, Farooq Sheikh and Vidya Sinha, relaunching Bindiya Goswami. If you collect the best performances of Utpal Dutt, you can see that most of his best performances are with Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

Nobody captured the dilemma of yound woman like him he did in Rajnigandha.. His comedies - Golmaal, Chupke Chupke, Kissi Se Na Kehna and Rang Birangi are still oven fresh.. I was already in love with Hrishidaa and this time I became obsessed about his movies. So much obsessed that I am collecting all his movies into my portable device.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee worked and called it quits gracefully. He made lot of "middle road" cinema in late 60's, 70's and early 80's and took a long hiatus. His last movie "Jhoot Bole Kauwa Kaate" came in 1998, 13 years after his insignificant "Namumkin". I had seen JBKK and felt it outdated at the time when Sharukh Khan and Salman Khan were in rise.

Even though I can't choose favourites among his movies, the topmost favourite is "Abhimaan" followed by "Rajnigandha", "Khubsoorat", "Anupama" and "Golmaal" making the top five favourites. I had collected all his movies links from Youtube and as I believe "Sharing is caring", these links are for you all to watch and enjoy the classics of Hrishidaa..
