LajjaThis dark, broody tale is set in Bangladesh amidst the riots of 1992 followed by the destruction of Babri Masjid in India. The protagonists of this novel are the Duttas - Sudhamoyi, his wife Kiranmoyee, son Suranjan and daughter Maya. It unfolds and moves forward in the perspective of Suranjan, whose belief in the leftists and communism were shattered by the happen ings around him including the abduction of his sister Maya. Quite a depressing tale of the turmoils a minority Hindu family in Dhaka undergoes. Lajja tracks the journey of people who believed in their homeland, love for the mother nation and the same things being crumbled and crashed by the fundamentalists and communals. The gradual transformation of East Pakistan to Democratic Bangladesh & from secular Bangaldesh to Islamized one are discussed in detail. At times the novel tends to be documentric with lot of statistics thrown in about gore rapes and plundering. However it took a lot of guts for the author Taslima Nasrin to throw stones living from the glass tower. Quite moving and poigant, relevant even after 17 years of writing, but not recommended for a timepass reading. - {oshits} reads for this post
