{mosimage}Ninne Pelladtha - One of the highest grossers in the annals of telugu cinema and walked away with all the awards in 1996. This movie consolidated Nagarjuna as the romantic icon of Telugu cinema and catapulted its director Krishna Vamsi to the top league. I love this movie immensely and has so much of sweet memories associated with it. I was at my Engg first year's vacation while this movie was released. Since I was very friendly with the Andhra guys at that time, I had an affinity for Telugu movies. So whenever I think of them I think of Ninne Pelladtha and vice versa. Thats why I have to break my resolution of not writing about movies anymore.

It is a feel good movie scripted in the lines of Bollywood blockbusters at that time - Hum Aapke Hain kaun & Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. The story is wafer thin riding the strength of scene executions and presentations. This was about two families which seperated by a marriage brought together after two decades by the marriage of their kids. Bhavani elopes with Prasad on her marriage day facing the wrath of her brother Sadhanandham thus severing the ties with them. Bhavani is blessed with three girl babies with Mahalakshmi (Tabu) being the eldest. About 20 years later, Mahalakshmi joins Pilot training and unknowingly ends up becoming guest of her uncle Sadhanandam's best friend. Love blossoms between Sadhanandham's son, Seenu (Nagarjuna) and Mahalakshmi and when truth surfaces, the lovers face opposition that ultimately strengthens their love, finally all ends well.
The movie celebrated the glory and fun of being in a happy joint family and affection. Rich production values, foot tapping music and excellent performances by everyone associated with this movie enabled this movie to get into the minds of Telugu cine goers forever. No gangsters or molls, literally all scenes replete with happiness & fun, minimal violence and melodrama made this movie ideal for watching together with the family that drove audience in throngs to the theatres. NP had a huge starcast that every frame was like a carnival. The movie was mounted on large sets depicting the homes of affluent family, slickly shot making it a visual treat. Infact even after 10 years of its theatrical release the movie still looks fresh with its ever young lead players - Nagarjuna, Tabu, Lakshmi & Kavita.
{mosimage}The movie is cleverly packaged with all cinematic commercial elements yet managing to look offbeat. Krishna Vamsi gave Nagarjuna a suave "Greek Veerudu" image with this movie. Nagarjuna with double duty as a producer and lead player managed to carry off both roles deftly. The National Award for Best wholesome entertainment and Filmfare award for Best Actor award are the testimony for his effective portrayal of both the roles. He was a dream for every Andhra girl with a heroic bike race introduction scene and sultry underwater sequences. He was equally cherubic in the family sequences and thoser moony eyes oozed sizzling romatica in the love scenes.

This is definitely a milestone in Tabu's career. This cute actress never looked so brilliant and effervescent in her career as she is in Ninne Pelladtha. She was every bit a native & affluent Telugu girl with modern looks. Nobody else could have done that role as beautiful as Tabu. She looked very much girlish in her "Pinnaform" dresses as well as feminine in simple plain sarees. She surprised with her sizzling sensuality in swimming sarongs in "Inka Edho Kavalantu..." song. Her less make up looks and a "suitable" voice made this performance one of the best in Telugu screen. She is the only one actress who could match the romantic intensity of Nagarjuna on celluloid. Her sensuous chemistry with Nagarjuna had set screen ablaze, foddering the gossip mills about their romantic involvement, sadly breaking Tabu's love life with Sajid Nadiadwala. Watch for yourself and you'll understand what I mean.
{mosimage}There is never a dull moment on screen when the movie is on. Every scene is mindblowing and I really am short of words which one to choose. The scenes that I found naughty are Lakshmi's introduction scene where her husband asks for coffee while she is praying and another scene with Lakshmi with her husband confessing his love and caught red handed by his son, and Nagarjuna ragging Tabu when he "discovers" her nick name. But the best of the scene is where Nagarjuna & Tabu meet in a den secretly without knowing that they are under the surveillance of family members, their reactions to Nagarjuna's comments and those 10 minute following that. Really hilarious scenes that needs no expertise in the language to get that essence.
Lakshmi as Nagarjuna's mother looked lovely. Kavitha as her family friend and other character artistes as family members completed the picture perfect family.
Song sequences are another major highlight of this movie. Songs draw heavy inspiration from "Hum Aapke Hain kaun" in "Didi Tera..." styled all woman celebration "Naa mogudu rampyari...", "Pehla Pehla Pyaar..." like "Kannullo Nee roopame.." and Mere Khwabon mein...(DDLJ) styled Nagarjuna's introduction "Greeku Veerudu" song.... and not to forget "Inka Edho Kaavalantu..." that set Seychelles scorching with romantic fire. I found this number terribly erotic with Nagarjuna biting Tabu's hips and her nail marks on Nagarjuna's chest. This happened to be Sandeep Chowta's debut movie and even today it sounds fresh with a right fusion on technique & soul. Hariharan & Chitra livens this album with "Kannullo nee roopame.." wile Soumya Rao aroused the animal instinct with sultry "Inka Edho Kaavalantu.." song.
{mosimage}This movie was dubbed in Tamil as "Unnaiye Kalyanam Pannikkirein..." and as "Jab Dil Kisi Pe Aata Hai..." in Hindi and did well in both the languages. Tabu was at the pinnacle of her career then and so was Nagarjuna, that benefitted both of them by getting national wide audiences for this movie. I am yet to come across anybody who had seen this movie but didn't like it. The Tamil version's rights are with Vijay TV and at one time, it was telecast at regular intervals. If you manage to catch up again, don't miss it.
{mosimage}On the whole this movie is still oven fresh. Even if re-released today, this movie will compete with any contemporary movie and give others run for their money. No wonder it is appealing to me visually as well as aesthetically whenever I see it even after 10 years of first viewing. I am sure you too will enjoy if you see it.
