What happens when your the film rights of your earlier books were lapped up instantly? You concieve your subsequent novels as movies itself. That's what has happened with Chetan Bhagat. Since his ONACC & Five Point Someone had been adapted as movies and with '3MOML' being converted into screenplay, Chetan's next novel had become "Bollywood" ready. Seems like Chetan will incorporate romantic songs into his next novel making it "screen" ready. The love story of a Punjabi boy & Tamil girl is so cliched and predictable through out. We, Tamilians have been subjected to the headache of viewing the same story thrice around the same time in "Poovellam Kaettuppaar", "Jodi" and "Minsara Kanna". Unfortunately this "2SOMM" will make the fourth version, so similiar is the incidents and screenplay. In the Chetan Bhagat's books there used to be an element of sarcastic humour but here it steps into racist arrogance at times. Example - When Krish gets down at Chennai Airport he finds everybody dark and pot bellied. And Chetan Bhagat fills with his cliched premarital sex episodes (so many sex scenes) and blackmailing the boss. Don't know when CB will come out of these repetitive stuffs. However the saving grace is his simple vocab, fluid writing style that never never you off at any point. Supposedly based on CB's own love story, I didn't like / enjoy what I read in the 260 pages but it might appeal some people.

Oflate I had given up my policy of reading a book over a week / 10 days because I get only the weekends for reading, so let me use the same to fullest. This weekend saw me catching up the Chetan Bhagat's best seller "One night at the Call center (ON@TCC)", which I bought for my friend Renuka on her request but couldn't meet her after that. This movie was made as Bollywood movie "Hello", starring Sohail Khan, Sharman Joshi, Gul Panag, Eesha Khoppikar, Amrita Arora and Salman Khan in the Guest Appearance, directed by his brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri. The best part about Chetan is his simple yet fluid writing style that makes the story flow smoothly. His vocabulary is not intimidating instead is arresting and captivating the reader's thoughts. ON@TCC works well for its approach towards the Indian youths and ends with a positive attitude. Not to miss in the whole book is the Chetan's male chauvinist humour, sarcasstic take on woman behaviour at various instances.

இது இந்திரா பார்த்தசாரதி எழுதி சாகித்ய அகாடெமி விருது பெற்ற நாவல். நடிகர் கமல்ஹாசன் கோவிந்த் நிஹாலனியின் ‘துரோஹ்கால்’ என்ர இந்திப்படத்தை தமிழில் “துரோகி” என்ற பெயரில் ரீமேக் செய்தபோது ரசிகர்கள் ஆட்சேபித்ததால் அதன் தலைப்பை“குருதிப்புனல்” என்று மாற்றிய போது தான் அந்த பெயரில் ஒரு புகழ் பெற்ற நாவல் இருப்பதை அறிந்துக்கொண்டேன். என்றாவது ஒரு நாள் அந்த நாவலை படிக்கவேண்டும் என்ற ஆர்வத்தை இன்றைய ரயில் பயணத்தில் தான் நிறைவேற்றிக்கொள்ள முடிந்தது. நம்புங்கள்... படத்தை (கதை வேறானாலும்) போல நாவலும் பரபரப்பாக இருந்தது. தஞ்சை கீழ்வெண்மணியில் நடந்த சம்பவத்தை அடிப்படையாக கொண்டு புணையப்பெற்ற இந்த கதை படிப்பவர்களின் மனதை உலுக்கிவிடும். அது என்ன கீழ்வெண்மணி சம்பவம்? Google-ல் தேடிக்கண்டு பிடிக்கும் பொறுப்பை உங்களுக்கு விட்டுவிடுகிறேன். மேலும் உங்களில் எத்தனை பேருக்கு - குருதிப்புனல் என்ற வார்த்தைக்கு அர்த்தம் தெரியும்?

மறைந்த எழுத்தாளர் ஸ்டெல்லா புரூஸின் கன்னி முயற்சி - நாவல் எழுதுவதில். இது இவர் திரைக்கதையாசிரியராக செய்த முயற்சி கைகூடாததால் நாவலாக மாற்றி தன்னுடைய முதல் நாவலாக எழுதினாராம் ஸ்டெல்லா. ஆனால் இந்த கதையை நான் திரைப்படமாக பார்த்திருக்கிறேன். அதை பற்றி கடைசியில் சொல்கிறேன். தலைப்பே சொல்லிவிடும் - இது ஒரு காதல் கதை என்று. இது ஒரு முக்கோண காதல் கதையும் கூட. குற்றாலத்திலிருந்து சென்னை வரும் வைத்தியநாதன், அவனது மேலாளர் சூர்யா (பெண்), அவனது சக ஊழியை ஆனந்தி என மூவரிடையே பின்னப்பட்ட காதல் வலை தான் - ஒரு முறை பூக்கும். இறுதியில் யாருடைய காதல் ஜெயித்தது என்பது தான் முடிவு. ஒரு சிறந்த எழுத்தாளருடைய கன்னி முயற்சி என்பதை தவிர பெரிதாக சொல்லிக்கொள்ளும் அளவுக்கு இதில் எதுவும் இல்லை.

இம்முறை சென்னை புத்தக கண்காட்சியில் நான் அதிகம் வாங்கியது ரவீந்த்ரநாத் தாகூரின் படைப்புக்களின் தமிழ் மொழிபெயர்ப்புக்கள். (இம்முறை சென்னை புத்தக கண்காட்சிக்கு போனது பற்றி ஒரு பதிவு இடவேண்டும் என்று நினைத்துக்கொண்டே இருக்கிறேன் ஆனால் நேரம் தான் கிடைக்கமாட்டேன் என்கிறது). சென்னைக்கும் பெங்களூருக்கும் இடையே மாறி மாறி சுற்றிக்கொண்டிருந்ததாலும், புது வீடு ஒழுங்குபடுத்திக்கொண்டிருப்பதாலும், படிக்கவும் அதிகம் சமயம் கிடைக்கவில்லை. எனினும் ஒரு சிறிய புத்தகமாக பார்த்து எடுத்து படித்தேன். அது ரவீந்த்ரநாத் தாகூரின் - சாருலதா. வங்காளத்தில் “நஷ்டநீர்ஹ்” (உடைந்த கூடு) என்ற பெயரில் வெளிவந்து, பின்னர் 1964-ல் திரு. சத்யஜித் ரே அவர்களால் “சாருலதா” என்ற பெயரில் எடுக்கப்பட்டு பல விருதுகளை அள்ளியதாம். இன்றும் தனக்கு மிகவும் திருப்தி தந்த (என்னை அந்த படத்தை மீண்டும் எடுக்க சொன்னால் எந்த மாற்றமும் செய்யாமல் அப்படியே எடுக்கும் அளவுக்கு நிறைவான படம் - சத்யஜித் ரே) படைப்பாக சத்யஜித் ரே-யால் சிலாகிக்கப்பட்ட பெருமை இந்த சாருலதாவுக்கு மட்டுமே உண்டு. இதன் கதை என்ன? உறவுகளில் உள்ள சிக்கல்களை, அதன் complexity-ஐ காமத்தை மீறிய ஈர்ப்பை இயல்பாக சொல்கிறது இந்த குறுநாவல்.

I took up this novel on the suggestion of our Chef, Vijay and I enjoyed every bit of this Michael Chrichton's 2002 novel. What held me towards the novel was its intriguing start.. a Nanotech engineer Jack Forman is relegated to a full time husband, with his wife Julia's changing attitude making Jack doubt whether she is into any extra marital affairs. He joins her company Xymos on an urgent basis and has lot of shocks in store for him. This book is a beautiful blend of Biology, Engineering and Electronics. You need not be a technical guy to understand this book, but even a layman like me can be able to relate to. While reading I remembered many concepts I had read in school like mutation, symbiosis and I got an idea / insight about nanotechnology. Since the novel was told by Jack in first person, the novel takes a re approach instead of being non committal. The novel is a page turner right from the page 1 with the emotional contents making the page move in the first half and the encounters with the dangerous swarms moving the pages fast in the second half. Michael Chrichton had done his research seriously and it shows in the Bibliography section. A honest effort to blend information with entertainment. While reading Michael Chrichton I remembered a lot about Tamil writer Late. Sujatha's style especially with the way they educate their readers. Now I am planning to read as much Michael Chrichton's works as possible. This is the first book I read it in pdf completely. While I was going to Salem last weekend standing on the crowded train, I couldn't resist reading this book in my iPod touch's screen and I didn't move a bit here and there for 5 hours. I was engaged so much by this novel.

எழுத்தாளர் / நடிகர் / இயக்குநர் / அரசியல் விமர்சகர் ‘சோ’வின் இந்த நாடகம் (தற்போது புத்தகமாக) கிட்டத்தட்ட 80-களின் இறுதியில் டி.டி-1 தொலைகாட்சியில் ஞாயிறு காலை தொடராக வந்தது. அப்போது தமிழ் சினிமா தாய்மார்கள் மற்றும் பாமரர்களின் கையில் இறுக்கமாக மாட்டிக்கொண்டிருந்த சமயம். எனவே லாஜிக் என்றால் என்ன என்று கேட்கும் அளவுக்கு அபத்தங்களின் கலவையாக திரையில் மயக்கிக்கொண்டு இருந்தது தமிழின் வணிகரீதியான சினிமா. இந்த நாடகம் மூலம் எழுத்தாளர்கள் என்று சொல்லிக்கொண்டு தங்களை நாடி வந்த தயாரிப்பாளர்களையும், சினிமா ரசிகர்களையும் ஏமாற்றிக்கொண்டு பிழைப்பு நடத்திக்கொண்டு இருந்த கதாசிரியர்களை ஒரு பிடி பிடித்து இருந்தார் சோ அவர்கள். இந்த (நாடக) புத்தகத்தை யதேச்சையாக தான் பார்த்தேன் & வாங்கினேன். ஏற்கனவே தொடராக பார்த்திருந்தாலும், படிக்க படிக்க சுவாரசியமாகவே இருந்தது இந்த ‘சரஸ்வதியின் சபதம்’. தொலைகாட்சி நாடகம் 13 வாரங்களுக்கு நீண்ட காரணத்தால் மேலும் சில சுவாரசியமான சம்பவங்களை சேர்க்க முடிந்தது சோ-வுக்கு. எனவே மேடை நாடகத்தின் பதிப்பான இந்த புத்தகத்தில் அந்த சம்பவங்கள் எல்லாம் இல்லாதது கொஞ்சம் வருத்தமே.

இது மறைந்த எழுத்தாளர் ஸ்டெல்லா புரூஸின் புத்தகங்களில் ஒன்று. அவருடைய பல (சற்றே பெரிய) சிறுகதைகளின் தொகுப்பு இந்த புத்தகம் & மீண்டும் அந்த ஞாபகங்கள்' என்பது அந்த ஒரு சிறுகதைகளில் ஒன்று. பல கதைகள் இருப்பினும் நம் மனதில் சட்டென ஒட்டிக்கொள்வது இந்த 'மீண்டும் அந்த ஞாபகங்கள் தான்'. அத்தனை கதைகளிலும் இது மட்டுமே காதல் கதை. மற்றவை அனைத்தும் மனிதத்துவத்தின் பல்வேறு நிலைகளில் தனிமையின் தாக்கத்தை கூறுபவை. பொதுவாகவே ஸ்டெல்லா புரூஸின் எழுத்துக்களில் தனிமை கொஞ்சம் தூக்கலாகவே இழைந்தோடும் எனவே இந்த சிறுகதைகள் மட்டும் அதற்கு விலக்கல்ல. இருப்பினும் நம் மனதை பாறாங்கல் போல அழுத்தும் melodrama அல்ல. படித்து முடித்ததும் நாம் அந்த மனிதர்களை நம் அண்டை அயலாரிலேயே பார்க்கலாம். இந்த புத்தகத்தில் மொத்தம் 6 சிறுகதைகள் உள்ளன.இது திரு. ஸ்டெல்லா புரூஸின் கடைசி எழுத்துக்களில் ஒன்று என்கிற நினைப்பே நம் மனதில் பாரம் ஏற்றுகிறது.
